Chicago '68

 By Robert W. Cluney

It happened in Chicago in nineteen sixty-eight

The Hippies held a convention to elect their candidate

The cops decided to attend, they made the blood flow red

As the clubs came crashing down on every Hippie head

Mayor Daley said, "We'll kill 'em

We'll chase 'em from the street

We'll chase 'em from the alleys

And kill each one we meet."

The cops came crashing through the park

"Kill 'em" was their cry

The Hippies broke their ranks and ran

For no one wants to die

A Catholic Priest, his hands held high

Walked into the throng

Praying to the God above

To stop this awful wrong

A policeman hit him with a club

And knocked him to the ground

Three more jumped upon him

And on him they did pound

They only wanted to help him and send him on his way

Whether it be to Heaven or Hell

Who is there to say

A newsman lost his camera

To a policeman's mighty swing

These cops wanted no pictures

While they done their thing

Keepers of law and order

Guardians of the peace

Adolph Hitler would have had a smile

For Chicago's famed police

Oh God where is our freedom

What have we gone and done

Who created this awful monster

That had us on the run

Where is our Constitution

Where is our Bill of Rights

We gave them to a Chicago cop

On a bloody August night
