Bungy Makes A Friend
By Robert W. Cluney
There was something strange in the air
But it did not matter to Bungy Bear
For he was asleep beneath a tree
His eyes were closed so he could not see
Suddenly he was wide awake
The fear in his heart he couldn’t shake
He got to his feet and looked around
There was a smell in the air and a very strange sound
He walked all around to a clearing so he could see better
He looked all around, now what was the matter
He sniffed the air and wiggled his toes
Scratched his ear and touched his nose
Then he saw it, a dark cloud in the sky
He knew what it meant and he wanted to cry
He saw the flames leaping from tree to tree
And Bungy knew this was no place to be
Bungy turned and started to run
Being caught by that fire wouldn’t be any fun
He stubbed his toe and rolled down the hill
He landed in a creek, boy what a spill
A fish popped up and looked at the bear
He said you’re no fish; you’ve got hair
You stick around here you’re going to get singed
And a bear without hair, that would be strange
Bungy splashed water and climbed out on a rock
He was suffering from environmental shock
While he was trying his dignity to save
His eyes opened wide, there was a cave
Now Bungy knew there was no time to terry
Things outside were getting kind of scary
With a dark cave at his nose and a fire at his tail
Whichever he tried he better not fail
He walked into the cave and to his surprise
A cougar lay there, fire reflecting in his eyes
With a cougar in front and a fire at his back
Bungy Bear froze solid in his tracks
Now cougars and bears just don’t get along
And Bungy just knew he’d done something wrong
Cougar said to Bungy, lay down and watch the show
With what’s out there, there’s no place to go
At first light of dawn, Bungy woke with a start
Cougar had moved, it near stopped his heart
Side by side they stood, at the cave door
And looking so sad, their world was no more
The trees were all gone, the ground was all black
They walked off together, neither one looking back
Cougar and Bungy, so close side by side
They walk together down the mountainside
Some people say you might see if you tried
A bear and a cougar walking side by side
Others will say that cannot be
But we know better – don’t we
